American Studies
American Studies is an interdisciplinary field that examines the culture and society of the United States, past and present. It incorporates the study of economics, history, literature, art, the media, film, urban studies and women’s studies, among other fields. As a discipline, its roots include concepts of place, nation, stereotype, symbol, and identity. Overall, American Studies scholars seek ways to define and explain America and its culture.
The 39 credit hour major in American Studies leads to the Bachelor of Arts degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. CNU's curriculum in American Studies critically examines what is unique and distinct about American life, exploring geographical and cultural landscapes of the United States . Courses present the diverse ideals, values, beliefs, and actions of the American people within the larger national culture and its institutions. Courses also explore the United States within comparative and international frameworks. Students will have the opportunity for experiential learning and study abroad.
