What Courses are Required in the Leadership
Studies Minor?
The Minor in Leadership Studies requires students to complete 21 credit hours (7 courses). These 21 credit hours apply toward the 120 credit hours needed to earn the bachelor’s degree. The first 12 credits hours in the minor comprise four required core leadership courses.
These 21 Credit Hours Include:
- Prerequisite — Foundations of Leadership Study (taken freshman or sophomore year)
- Core courses — 9 credit hours
- Ethical courses — 3 credit hours
- Cross-cultural courses — 3 credit hours
- Elective courses in the minor — 3 credit hours
In addition, students are offered the opportunity to enhance leadership skills through supervised internships in business, government, education and not-for-profit organizations. They also are encouraged to volunteer in a vast array of service organizations in the Newport News area, or participate in program-sponsored group service.

What Courses are Required in the American Studies Major?
The Major in American Studies is comprised of five core courses in American Studies with the remaining courses selected from approved, related courses from various disciplines as determined by the chosen concentration. Students will work closely with an advisor to ensure their curriculum has coherence, depth, and breadth and that it is consistent with the students' future plans. The Bachelor of Arts degree in Interdisciplinary Studies requires that students fulfill the liberal learning curriculum, American Studies Core courses and a concentration in either social sciences or humanities.
These 39 credit hours include:
- American Studies Core Courses - 15 credit hours
- Humanities Concentration - 24 credit hours
OR:
- Social Sciences Concentration - 24 credit hours
The Minor in American Studies requires 18 credit hours, including 3 of the American Studies Core courses plus nine additional hours at the 300-400 level chosen in consultation with an assigned departmental advisor from courses approved for the Major in American Studies.
